Know Your Skin Type

Juliet's Beauty & Makeup Tips

Among the many lessons I've learned is that yellow-tinted base and concealer fixes my ruddy complexion. If I wear heavy powder, especially under the eyes, it looks like crepe on me. To know what makeup works best on you, you should know not just your skin tone but also your skin type.

The five major skin types are:

·         Normal. Your skin tone is even, smooth, and firm with small- to medium-size pores.

Skin solution: Stick to light moisturizing foundation and use a mix of cream and powder blushes and eye shadows.

·         Oily. Your skin is shiny with larger more visible pores and you're prone to blackheads, whiteheads and pimples.

Skin solution: Stay away from oil-based cosmetics and stick to powders instead.
·         Dry. Your skin is dull and flakey with small pores, and sensitive to temperature.

Skin solution: Apply moisturizer and primer before using powder cosmetics, or use cream-based cosmetics.

·         Combination. Your skin has oily areas usually across the forehead, nose, and chin with dry areas on the cheeks, and around the eyes and neck. You're more prone to acne in the oily areas only.

Skin solution: Use oil-free foundation on the oily areas and a moisturizing foundation for the dry areas. Cream-to-powder foundations and eye shadows also work well.

·         Sensitive. Your skin burns easily when exposed to the sun, feels temperature changes easily, and more prone to break out in rashes from cosmetics.

Skin solution: Use mineral foundations and cosmetics (pure and natural) that allow skin to breathe.

No one likes to be ruddy, itchy or pimply—ever. Matching the right makeup to your skin type will not only help you look your best, but it'll minimize any skin reactions, so you can always put your best face forward.

Find the Right Foundation Shade for Your Skin Tone

Juliet's Beauty & Makeup Tips

The first step in putting your best face forward is figuring out the right base color. Think of foundation as the canvas in which you highlight your best facial assets, and cover the uneven spots with concealer (a girl's best friend!) Finding the right base color is a task all its own, so here's what I recommend:

·         When shopping for a foundation, look for the word non-comodenogenic (the fancy term that means it doesn't clog your pores). The product's claim should also be that it goes on evenly, or better yet, that it makes your skin glow.

·         Test the base on the back of your hand. If it blends into your skin without a visible line or dramatic tone difference, this could be the one.

·         Blend, blend, blend. Foundation isn't a mask. Your true skin should shine through. Concealer should be one shade lighter then your base. Make sure that you dot under the eyes (use your pinky!) and dot over any blotchiness, blemishes or redness, and then blend some more. (Did I say blend?)

Final words: Don't hide behind a mask of makeup as I once did. It took me years(!) to learn not to use heavy powder, especially under the eyes because it screams to the world: LOOK, I'M WEARING MAKEUP! The goal here is to let your natural beauty shine through—and shine you shall!

African Hair Problems

Tips to Maintain Healthy Black Hair!

Traditionally, black hair traditionally is more curly and dry compared to hair of other ethnicities. The curl pattern of this hair is tighter, making the structure of the hair weaker and prone to breakage. This tight curl pattern also prevents the natural oils of the scalp from flowing down each hair strand to keep it moisturized. However, there are ways to help your hair stay healthy and strong.

Weekly Maintenance Tips
African-American hair tends be on the dry side. As a result, daily shampooing of this type of hair can make it even drier and cause brittleness. A rule of thumb many African-Americans follow is to shampoo the hair at least once a week. However, depending on how active you are and how much styling product is used on your hair, you may want to shampoo your hair every three days.
Hair should be shampooed with a moisturizing shampoo to clean the hair without stripping away all moisture. A moisturizing conditioner should also be used to moisturize and detangle the hair. If you find that your hair still feels dry and "crunchy" after washing, a cholesterol deep conditioning treatment or hot oil treatment may be needed to restore a healthy level of moisture to your hair and make it softer.

Daily Maintenance Tips for Black Hair
Since this type of hair lacks moisture, it is best not to apply too much styling product(s) to it. The main styling product needed is a scalp conditioner or oil. Massage the scalp conditioner or scalp oil into the scalp and brush through the hair using a natural boar-bristle brush for straightened or relaxed hair. For natural "Afro" hair apply conditioner or oil directly to the hair, using only enough to make the hair softer and create a sheen. Gently comb your hair each day to detangle it and get rid of knots. Wear a silk or silky scarf or doo rag to bed each night to help hair retain its moisture and to prevent hair breakage.

Tips for Styling Black Hair
Hair styling can create fantastic looks for many people. However, it can also do some damage to the hair. African-Americans who use heated appliances to help style their hair such as hot combs, hot curlers, curling irons, flat irons, or dryers need to do so sparingly. Ideally, heat styling should be done one or twice a week because it can strip away much needed moisture from the hair. Try to avoid styling products that contain alcohol, specifically SD alcohol, in them. This type of alcohol strips away moisture. Do not use styling products on the hair everyday as this can lead to product buildup on the hair. These black hair care tips will help you maintain healthier hair. For optimal hair health, maintain a well-balanced diet, get adequate exercise, and drink plenty of water. This will help healthy hair grow from your hair follicles. Also, a multi-vitamin containing a vitamin B complex will also promote healthy hair growth.
